OGS launches new WWI heritage society

The Ontario Genealogical Society sent the following message in its weekly eNewsletter.

“To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War, OGS has launched a new Heritage Society. The First World War Society is a lineage society open to anyone who can show descent from a person who served in a documented capacity on the Allied side of the First World War.

“To qualify for this Society, your research must show that your named ancestor(s) fits in the category above, and then show the line of descent from that ancestor(s) to you or the person you wish named on the certificate.

“For more information and an application form visit the Heritage Societies area on the OGS website: http://www.ogs.on.ca/heritage_societies.php#WW1 .”

The application fee is $40 for OGS members and $80 for non-members. If you have more than one direct ancestor who served during WWI, details about the reduced cost is available in the above link.

Other heritage societies founded by OGS are the Fathers of Confederation Society, War of 1812 Society, Centenary Club for those with at least 100 years of ancestry in Ontario, 1837 Rebellion Society, and the Upper Canada Society.

OGS partial year membership

If you have never been an OGS member or not renewed your membership since 2011, you can take advantage of the society’s partial year membership that is available as of June 1. For $35.70, you will receive all the benefits of individual membership, including the quarterly publication for August and November and access to the webinars.
